Your Wedding Day Isn't a Photoshoot: My Approach to Wedding Photography
Your Wedding Day Isn't a Photoshoot
When I think about wedding photography, I don't think about spending 10 hours telling couples where to stand, how to pose, or what to do next. I think about the moments that happen naturally throughout the day. The laughs with your friends, the little looks between you and your partner, the excitement before the ceremony, and the moments you probably didn't even realise were happening. For me, the best wedding photographs are the ones that feel real. My approach to wedding photography is relaxed, natural and documentary-inspired. I want to capture your wedding day as it actually happens, rather than turning it into one long photoshoot. You should be able to enjoy your wedding, spend time with the people you love, and be present in the moment without constantly worrying about where the camera is. That's what I try to bring to every wedding I photograph.
I'm There to Capture Your Wedding, Not Take It Over
I know having your photo taken isn't everyone's favourite thing. Some couples love being in front of the camera, while others feel a little awkward or uncomfortable when all the attention is on them. Both are completely fine. My job isn't to force you into a particular style of photography. It's to work with you, understand what makes you comfortable, and capture the day in a way that feels natural. There will be moments when I'll offer a little direction, particularly when we're taking portraits or organising a group photo. But I don't want you to feel like you need to perform for the camera all day. Some of my favourite photographs come from moments when couples have forgotten I'm even there. A quick laugh between friends. A parent getting emotional during the ceremony. Everyone dancing at the reception. The quiet moments between the big events. These are the photographs that help tell the full story of your wedding.
Why I Love Candid Wedding Photography
There's something special about looking through your wedding photos years later and remembering exactly how you felt in that moment. Not just what you looked like, but who you were with, what was happening around you, and the emotions you were experiencing. That's one of the main reasons I love candid wedding photography. I want your gallery to include the big moments, of course. Your ceremony, your portraits, your first dance and all the important parts of the day. But I also want to capture everything in between. The moments you might not think to ask a photographer to photograph are often the ones you'll love looking back on. The way your friends reacted when you walked into the room. Your dad trying to hold back tears. Your best mate making everyone laugh. The way your partner looks at you when nobody else is paying attention. These moments don't need to be perfectly posed to be meaningful. Sometimes, they're better because they aren't.
A Relaxed Approach to Your Wedding Day
I don't believe your wedding timeline should revolve entirely around photography. Of course, making time for photos is important, and I'll help guide you through that when needed. But I also want you to have the freedom to enjoy your day without feeling like you're constantly being pulled away from your guests. Depending on your wedding plans, we might spend some time taking portraits together, capturing a few family photos, or getting some shots with your bridal party and friends. I'll be there to help when you need it, but I also want you to have time to enjoy the people around you. My goal is to create a gallery that feels complete without making photography feel like the main event. Because your wedding is about more than just getting great photos. It's about celebrating your relationship and spending time with the people who matter most.
Getting to Know Me
I'm James, a Brisbane-based wedding photographer, and I photograph weddings across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Northern New South Wales and beyond. I first picked up a camera when I was 14. At the time, I mainly wanted to photograph parties with friends. As I got older, photography became something I took more seriously, particularly while I was at college in New York. Since then, photography has become a big part of my life, and weddings have given me the opportunity to combine my love of photography with meeting people and experiencing some pretty incredible days. What I enjoy most is being able to tell a story through photographs. Every couple and every wedding is different. Some days are relaxed and intimate, while others are full of energy, dancing and a packed dance floor. I don't want every wedding gallery to look exactly the same. I want your photos to reflect you, your relationship and the way your wedding day actually felt.
Wedding Photography in Brisbane and Beyond
Whether you're getting married in Brisbane, on the Gold Coast, in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, or somewhere further away, I'd love to hear about your plans. If you're looking for a wedding photographer who takes a natural, documentary approach and wants you to enjoy your wedding day without feeling like you're constantly posing, we might be a good fit. I'll be there to capture the big moments, the small moments and all the things that happen in between. Because when you look back at your wedding photos, I want them to feel like your wedding day—not a photoshoot.
